What is red dye 40?

On Jan. 21st, 2015 we decided to eliminate Red Dye 40 from our 4 year old daughter's diet. There were many things that happened a few weeks before that led us to this and it wasn't from our doctor, teacher, etc. I remember that night well. This is what happened:
It was around 6pm that night and I was looking at another "yellow face" report from school. She had another bad report yet again. Second one this week already, and another one to add to the months total. Why was she acting out so much at school? What was causing her to hit at her teachers whom she loved dearly? Why was she kicking and screaming at us over these little bitty things? Why was she so hard to get to sleep and yet so hard to get up? Was she sick? No. Nothing. Had anything in our routine changed? Again, nothing. Then like a light bulb---sugar!? Maybe it's been an overload of sugar. I mean after all, the drink of the week was fruit punch Gatorade. That stuff has a lot of sugar.
Then I thought back more, a few weeks before Christmas we were having a rough time with her then also. And omg she was drinking that Gatorade then too! But not really in between the times.
So I got our her reports from school and between the two things of Gatorade we had mostly "green faces" with just a few "yellows." So here I was thinking I had found the problem. Then it hit be like a ton of  bricks--- holy crap--- it's the Red Dye!

I had heard things on the news. Just seen bits and pieces of it on mommy blogs but never looked into it. Honestly, I just thought it was one of those eat organic, crunchy Mom things. Seriously how could this dye stuff be that bad?!
